We don't own a WHOOP or an Oura ring: this comparison is built from WHOOP's and Oura's own documentation, published tests and studies, and public owner reports.

Quick answer: Choose WHOOP (the WHOOP 5.0 on its One or Peak plan) if you lift, train hard or want a buzzing alarm; choose the Oura Ring 5 if sleep is the point and you'd rather not wear a strap. Money barely separates them: three years of WHOOP One costs $597, and an Oura Ring 5 with membership $609 (October 2026).1, 2, 3

Spend an evening in the WHOOP and Oura subreddits and you'll notice the two camps aren't even arguing about the same thing. Ring people talk about sleep, cycle tracking and forgetting they have anything on. Strap people talk about strain, lifting and a battery that goes two weeks. And a surprising number of them end up wearing both.4

We built this from WHOOP's and Oura's support pages and stores (checked October 3, 2026), PCMag's side-by-side test, three peer-reviewed studies and who paid for them, and seven Reddit threads from 2026, paraphrased. Most comparisons ranking for this search still use the Oura Ring 4. This one uses the Oura Ring 5, which started shipping June 4, 2026, and WHOOP's plans as WHOOP lists them today.5

The Short Version
  • WHOOP if you lift, do CrossFit or HYROX-style training, want a vibrating alarm, or want to charge without taking it off (that takes the Wireless PowerPack, included with Peak and Life, and with One bought direct from WHOOP in the US). WHOOP One is $199 a year, so $597 over three years.
  • Oura Ring 5 if sleep, cycle tracking and comfort matter more than workouts, or you already wear a watch. $399 plus $69.99 a year comes to $609 over three years.
  • Accuracy is closer than either fan base admits, and no peer-reviewed study has tested the WHOOP 5.0 or MG against the Oura Ring 5. Here's what the studies on older models found, and who funded them.
  • Cheapest way in: the Oura Ring 4, on sale at Oura's store for $244.30 on October 3, 2026 (sale prices change), which works out to $454 over three years.

How Do WHOOP 5.0 and the Oura Ring 5 Compare at a Glance?

The WHOOP listing sells a 12-month membership with the sensor and band, and you choose One, Peak or Life on the page. On Amazon, as listed on October 3, 2026, One comes with a CoreKnit band and a wired Basic Charger; Peak and Life include the Wireless PowerPack. On the Oura listing, pick your size and finish; Oura bills its membership separately.

How Much Do WHOOP and Oura Cost Over 1, 2 and 3 Years?

Over three years, WHOOP One costs $597 and an Oura Ring 5 in Silver or Black with membership costs $609, so the cheapest versions of each land $12 apart. WHOOP Peak ($717) and Life ($1,077) cost more, and a discounted Oura Ring 4 ($454) costs less. These are the prices WHOOP and Oura list, checked October 3, 2026, before tax.1, 2, 3, 15

Setup (USD, prices listed by WHOOP and Oura on October 3, 2026)UpfrontAfter 1 yearAfter 2 yearsAfter 3 years
WHOOP One (5.0 sensor)$199$199$398$597
WHOOP Peak (5.0 sensor)$239$239$478$717
WHOOP Life (MG sensor)$359$359$718$1,077
Oura Ring 4 on sale + membership ($244.30, yearly plan)$244.30$314$384$454
Oura Ring 5 Silver or Black + membership (yearly plan)$399$469$539$609
Oura Ring 5 other finishes + membership (yearly plan)$499$569$639$709

How we calculated it: WHOOP's yearly price is paid at the start of each 12-month term; WHOOP says monthly billing ($25, $30 or $40 a month) is only offered to members past their first 12 months, in some renewal cases. For Oura, it's the ring price plus $69.99 a year, first billed when the included month ends; paying $5.99 a month instead lands within a dollar of the same three-year total. Each column is what you've paid by the end of that year. WHOOP's 30-day free trial isn't counted. A Wireless PowerPack if your One kit doesn't include one, bands, extra chargers, an Oura charging case and sales tax aren't included, and Oura's Ring 4 price is a sale price.1, 3, 15, 16

Bar chart of cumulative cost after one, two and three years: WHOOP One $199, $398, $597; WHOOP Peak $239, $478, $717; Oura Ring 5 with membership $469, $539, $609; Oura Ring 4 on sale with membership $314, $384, $454
WHOOP is far cheaper in year one; by year three the cheapest plan and the Ring 5 are nearly even. Chart: Kudomax, from WHOOP and Oura list prices checked October 3, 2026.

The lines cross in year four. WHOOP One keeps costing $199 a year while the ring only adds $69.99, so a fourth year puts the Oura Ring 5 at about $679 against $796 for WHOOP One. That assumes the ring's battery holds up. Oura's warranty is one year, though owners describe Oura replacing fading rings after an in-app diagnostic; WHOOP replaces a defective sensor or battery pack for as long as you're a paying member.4, 14, 15 WHOOP also refreshes hardware through the membership: 4.0 members can still upgrade by extending their membership or paying a one-time fee: $49 for a 5.0 on Peak, or $79 for the MG, which moves you to Life and renews at $359 a year. WHOOP loosened that policy after complaints at launch.1, 17

What happens if you stop paying?

WHOOP stops tracking: once your membership ends, it no longer collects, uploads or analyzes your data, though your history stays viewable.8 The Oura Ring 5 drops to three daily scores plus a data export, with detailed sleep, heart rate and temperature trends behind the fee, so you own the ring, but on its own it's three numbers a day.3

Which WHOOP plan should you compare with Oura?

WHOOP One is the cheapest plan and covers the core of what Oura's membership does: sleep, strain and recovery, Strength Trainer, VO2 max, AI coaching and hormonal insights. Feature for feature, though, Oura's membership also includes Daytime Stress and a Cardiovascular Age estimate, and WHOOP's closest equivalents, Stress Monitor and Healthspan with WHOOP Age, start at Peak ($239) along with Health Monitor. Matched that way, three years is $717 for Peak against $609 for the Oura Ring 5.1, 3 Life ($359) moves you to the WHOOP MG sensor for on-demand ECG and Blood Pressure Insights. WHOOP also lists irregular heart rhythm notifications on Life, but its regional page doesn't include the US yet (August 2026).1, 12

Bought direct in the US, One comes with the 5.0 sensor, a SuperKnit band and the Wireless PowerPack, per WHOOP's pricing page; WHOOP's One listing on Amazon ships a CoreKnit band and a wired Basic Charger instead. If the wireless charger matters to you, check the box contents before you pay.1 Our WHOOP 5.0 vs WHOOP MG comparison helps you pick a plan, and our breakdown of how much WHOOP costs covers the billing fine print.

WHOOP vs Oura for Sleep: Which Is Better?

For sleep, the Oura Ring 5 is the better pick for most people. It shows more of the overnight detail, a ring is easy to forget in bed, and its temperature sensor feeds cycle and illness insights. WHOOP is better if you want a nightly sleep target, bedtime coaching and a buzz on the wrist to wake you up.

PCMag's Andrew Gebhart wore an Oura Ring 4 and a WHOOP 5.0 and found both accurate for sleep and stress, but preferred how Oura lays out the details. WHOOP's sleep page leans on recommendations, sleep debt and bedtimes, and it doesn't show overnight respiration, skin temperature or average heart rate there, even though it tracks all three.18 WHOOP's Sleep Performance score blends how much you slept against your personal sleep need with consistency, efficiency and sleep stress, and counts 85% or more as optimal. Sleep Planner then suggests bed and wake times.19

The alarm is a real difference. WHOOP 5.0 and MG vibrate to wake you; the Oura Ring 5 has no vibration motor, so it can't.7, 10 In WHOOP's community forum, several 5.0 and MG owners, posting from May 2025 into January 2026, said the buzz is weaker than the 4.0's and they sleep through it, while others prefer the gentler alarm. In December 2025 a WHOOP moderator said the softer feel comes from design choices made to shrink the sensor, with no fix announced.20 On the Oura side, the dedicated temperature sensor feeds period prediction and Symptom Radar, and the Readiness score pulls in body temperature, sleep balance and sleep regularity.2, 7, 21, 22

Owners who've worn both mostly split the same way: the ring for sleep and early signs of getting sick, the strap for training; one who compared them overnight saw totals within about 3% of each other. Comfort cuts both ways: some can't sleep in a strap, and others sold the ring because their fingers swell at night.4

WHOOP vs Oura Accuracy: What Do the Studies Actually Show?

No peer-reviewed study has tested the WHOOP 5.0 or MG against the Oura Ring 5; the closest is one journalist's night in a sleep lab. Studies of older models put the two close on sleep staging, while one independent study found Oura closer to an ECG for overnight HRV, a result WHOOP's scientists dispute. Who paid for each study matters, so it's listed next to each finding:

Put together: for sleep timing and duration, both are close enough that the scoring formula matters more than the sensor. For workouts, WHOOP has the edge, especially on the bicep. For overnight HRV, Oura has the stronger independent evidence, on older hardware. One night or one study proves very little.

Why don't WHOOP Recovery and Oura Readiness agree?

WHOOP Recovery and Oura Readiness disagree because they're built differently. Recovery is a percentage: 67% or more is green, 34% to 66% yellow and 33% or less red. It leans on HRV and resting heart rate from your sleep, and WHOOP weights HRV toward slow-wave sleep and the later part of the night.31 Readiness is a 0-to-100 score with 85 and up labeled Optimal, built from nine contributors including body temperature, and Oura's HRV is the average of five-minute samples taken across the night.22, 32 A yellow WHOOP morning and a Good Oura morning can describe the same night. Owners split on which one matches how they feel: some lifters find WHOOP's recovery maddening, and others trust it more than Oura's.4 If yours is stuck low, our guide to what actually helps a low WHOOP Recovery score goes through the usual suspects.

WHOOP vs Oura for Lifting: Which Works Better in the Gym?

WHOOP is the better choice for lifting. Oura itself suggests taking the ring off for weightlifting, while WHOOP is built to stay on, can move to your bicep, and counts strength work toward its Strain score.33, 34

And scratches from wear and tear aren't covered by Oura's warranty.33 Lifters on r/ouraring describe the ring pressing into the finger on a barbell. Some take it off, some wear fingerless gloves or a cover, and a couple of Ring 5 owners say the slimmer ring bothers them less than older ones did. People wearing both also point out that Oura's Activity score gives little credit for a lifting session that WHOOP counts as real strain.4 Oura's workaround is Live Activity: with a membership you can start a workout in the Oura app and pair a chest strap like the Polar H10 for live heart rate, though steps from that session won't count if the ring isn't on.11

WHOOP's Strain adds muscular load to cardiovascular load. For weightlifting, HIIT and powerlifting it estimates muscular strain automatically from the activity and its length, and if you log sets, reps and weights in Strength Trainer it measures the speed and intensity of each rep.34 Placement matters. Across 19 workouts with WHOOP on the biceps (HYROX simulations, runs, swims and rides, no lifting sessions), the5krunner measured a 0.98 correlation with a reference heart rate source, and saw a clear drop on the wrist in HYROX and CrossFit sessions, where carries, pulls and wall balls disrupt the optical signal.10 Our guides to smart rings and lifting and Oura Ring 5 covers go deeper on keeping a ring in the gym.

Ring or Strap: Which Is Easier to Wear 24/7?

The ring is easier to forget about, and the strap is easier to never take off. Which one fits your life depends on these four things.

Charging and battery

WHOOP rates the 5.0 and MG at 14+ days, and PCMag got 16.5 days from a 5.0. With the Wireless PowerPack (included with Peak and Life, and with One bought direct in the US) it charges while you wear it and move around; the wired Basic Charger has to stay plugged into a cable while it charges.1, 6, 9, 18 The Oura Ring 5 lasts 6 to 9 days but comes off for about 80 minutes to charge, and it stores only up to three days of data, so open the app every couple of days.7

Sizing, swelling and weight loss

A strap adjusts. The Oura Ring 5 comes in whole sizes 6 to 13 only, and Oura says to wear the sizing kit for 24 hours, including a night, and pick the smaller size if you're between two (our Oura Ring 5 sizing guide has the details).35 If you're losing weight, plan on buying another ring at some point; an r/ouraring commenter who dropped about 80 pounds went from a size 14 to a 13.4

Water, hands and the kitchen

Both handle showers and swimming. WHOOP is rated IP68 to 10 meters for two hours, the ring to 100 meters, and neither is meant for diving.6, 7 For its titanium rings, Oura suggests taking the ring off for rigorous handwashing and when handling pots and pans; its ceramic-ring tips add taking it off before washing hands or doing dishes.33

Looks, and the watch you already wear

PCMag found both comfortable but gave the ring the edge on looks, since WHOOP's strap reads as gym gear unless you buy a dressier band.18 If you already wear a watch you love, the ring is the easier add. Plenty of people also run WHOOP on the other wrist or the bicep next to a watch.4

Oura Ring 5 or Ring 4: Which Oura Is the Better Deal Against WHOOP?

On price, the Ring 4. Oura's store lists it at $244.30 in Silver and Stealth, down from $349, which makes three years with membership $454 against $609 for the Ring 5 (October 3, 2026).15 The Ring 4 is wider (7.9 mm against 6.09 mm), comes in sizes 4 to 15, stores up to a week of data and lasts 5 to 8 days; the Ring 5 is slimmer and rated for 6 to 9.7, 36 Membership and features such as Blood Pressure Signals work on both, but the sizing kits aren't interchangeable.13, 35 If a bulky ring is what's pushing you toward WHOOP, try the Ring 5. Our Oura Ring 5 review covers the newer ring in depth.

What Are the Downsides of WHOOP and Oura?

WHOOP's biggest downside is that it only works while you pay. Oura's is a $399 ring that still needs a membership and doesn't love the gym.3, 8, 33

What is the WHOOP controversy?

Two stories come up. In May 2025, WHOOP first asked existing members to extend their membership or pay $49 or $79 for the new 5.0 or MG hardware, then widened free upgrades after complaints and said an old blog post had wrongly promised free upgrades after six months.17 In July 2025, the FDA sent WHOOP a warning letter saying Blood Pressure Insights was being marketed as an unauthorized medical device; WHOOP called that overreach.37 After the FDA rewrote its general wellness guidance in January 2026 and WHOOP changed the feature and its labeling, the agency issued a closeout letter on June 17, 2026.38

What is the downside of WHOOP?

Why are people getting rid of their Oura rings?

Owners mostly cite the membership on top of a $399 ring, fingers that swell or shrink, the ring getting in the way at the gym, and batteries that fade after a year or two. In a September r/ouraring thread about a ring that no longer lasted two days, several owners said Oura replaced theirs after an in-app diagnostic, and one was on a third ring in under two years.4 Our Fitbit Air vs Oura Ring comparison digs further into why owners leave and what the lawsuit over Oura's sleep claims alleges.

WHOOP or Oura: Which Should You Buy?

Buy WHOOP if training is the point; buy the Oura Ring 5 if sleep is. Start at the top of this list and stop at the first line that fits you:

  1. You lift, do CrossFit or HYROX, or grip a bar most days → WHOOP, worn on the bicep for training.
  2. You want a silent alarm that won't wake a partner → WHOOP, though heavy sleepers should keep a phone alarm as backup. The Oura Ring 5 can't vibrate.
  3. You're losing weight or your fingers swell → WHOOP. A strap adjusts; a ring means buying another.
  4. You want an on-demand ECG → WHOOP Life with the MG ($359 a year); in the US it doesn't include background AFib alerts yet. Oura lists no AFib feature as of October 2026.12, 13 For background AFib alerts without a subscription, see our Fitbit Air vs WHOOP comparison.
  5. You already wear a watch you like → Oura Ring 5.
  6. Sleep, cycle tracking or early illness signals are why you're buying → Oura Ring 5.
  7. You'll keep it longer than three years → Oura Ring 5. It costs less than WHOOP One from year four on.
  8. You want the smallest bill this year → WHOOP One at $199, or an Oura Ring 4 on sale.
  9. You won't pay a subscription at all → Neither. See below.

What If You Don't Want to Pay a Subscription at All?

Then skip both. Our best WHOOP alternatives without a subscription covers screenless bands that keep sleep and recovery data free, and our best smart rings with no subscription ranks rings like the RingConn Gen 3 that don't charge a monthly fee. Our Ultrahuman Ring PRO review covers Ultrahuman's $479 ring, which US Customs cleared in March 2026. If you're set on one of these two, Black Friday is November 27 and WHOOP took $40 off Peak and $60 off Life last year; our fitness tracker Black Friday guide and Oura Ring Black Friday guide track both.39

WHOOP vs Oura FAQ

Is WHOOP or Oura more accurate?

Neither has a clear lead, and no peer-reviewed study has compared the WHOOP 5.0 or MG with the Oura Ring 5. Older-model studies found similar sleep-stage agreement, about 60% for each, while an Air Force-funded 2025 study found the Oura Ring 4 closer to an ECG for overnight HRV. For workouts, WHOOP does better, especially worn on the bicep.10, 23, 24

Is WHOOP or Oura better for sleep?

The Oura Ring 5, for most people. It shows more overnight detail, adds temperature-based cycle and illness insights, and is easy to sleep in. WHOOP is the better pick if you want a nightly sleep target, bedtime coaching and a vibrating alarm, which the Oura Ring 5 doesn't have.7, 18, 19

Is WHOOP or Oura cheaper?

In year one, WHOOP: $199 for One against $468.99 for an Oura Ring 5 with a year of membership. Over three years they're nearly even, at $597 and $608.97. After that, Oura gets cheaper every year, since its membership is $69.99 a year against $199 for WHOOP One (October 2026).1, 2, 3

Does WHOOP work without a membership?

No. When your membership ends, WHOOP stops collecting, uploading and analyzing your data, though you can still view your history. The sensor comes with the plan: $199 a year for One, $239 for Peak and $359 for Life with the MG, as listed by WHOOP in 2026.1, 8

What does the Oura Ring do without a membership?

Very little. Oura says you'll see only your three daily scores (Readiness, Activity and Sleep), the battery, your profile, settings and the Explore library, though you can still export your data. Membership costs $5.99 a month or $69.99 a year in the US, with the first month included (October 2026).3

Can you lift weights with an Oura Ring?

You can, but Oura suggests removing it for weightlifting and other high-friction activities, and scratches aren't covered by its warranty. Many lifters take it off, wear fingerless gloves or a cover, or pair a chest strap with Oura's Live Activity feature to record the session without the ring.11, 33

Does the Oura Ring 5 have a vibrating alarm?

No. The Oura Ring 5 has no vibration motor, so it can't buzz you awake. The WHOOP 5.0 and MG have a haptic alarm, though some owners find it weaker than the WHOOP 4.0's and keep a phone alarm as a backup; WHOOP says the softer buzz is a trade-off of the smaller sensor.7, 10, 20

Is WHOOP still worth it in 2026?

It is if you train hard, especially with weights, and you'll actually act on Strain and Recovery. If you mostly want sleep data, an Oura Ring 5 costs about the same over three years and less after that, and no-subscription bands now cover the basics for a one-time price.1, 2

Can you wear WHOOP and Oura together?

Yes, and plenty of people do, usually the ring for sleep and WHOOP or a watch for training. Expect different HRV, recovery and sleep numbers, since each brand uses its own formula, and let only one of them write workouts to Apple Health so your steps don't double count.4, 22, 31
