Fitbit Air vs Inspire 3: Same $100, Screen or No Screen?
Quick answer: Pick the Fitbit Air if you want the lightest band to sleep in and you're happy checking everything on your phone. Pick the Inspire 3 if you want the time, texts, a timer and workout stats on your wrist, or a battery rated for 10 days instead of 7. Price won't settle it: Google lists them at $99.99 and $99.95 (October 5, 2026).1, 2, 3, 4

Google sells two Fitbits for the same money, four cents apart, and they couldn't be more different to live with. The Inspire 3 is a 2022 tracker with a small color screen. The Air is a 2026 pebble with nothing to look at; everything it records lands on your phone.2, 4
So it's mostly screen or no screen. But the spec sheets bury a few things that matter: update guarantees, which new features each one gets, what the Inspire 3 stops tracking when it's clipped on, and what Premium adds. We pulled them from Google's store and help pages (checked October 5, 2026), Google's announcements, DC Rainmaker, Tom's Guide and an r/fitbit owners' thread, paraphrased.
- Fitbit Air if you want the lightest, thinnest band to sleep in and don't need a screen. It's 12 grams, charges in 90 minutes, and it's in line for Google's new Health Guardian trends (with Premium).
- Inspire 3 if you glance at your wrist for the time, texts or a timer, or want up to 10 days per charge. It fits bigger wrists and it goes on sale.
- Money: about $100 either way. Over three years, Premium is the real swing: roughly $100 without it, $400 with it.
- Age: Google guarantees the Inspire 3's security updates until at least February 2028, three months short of the Air.
Fitbit Air vs Inspire 3: Which Is Better?
Neither wins across the board. The Air takes weight, charging and the newer features; the Inspire 3 takes battery, the screen and fit options.1, 3, 12
For most people it comes down to row two. If you check your wrist a dozen times a day, get the screen. If you never do, it's just one more thing that lights up.
How Do the Fitbit Air and Inspire 3 Compare on Paper?
Same app, same core health sensors, same AFib notifications. The hardware around them is where they split.1, 3, 4, 8

Do You Actually Need a Screen?
You do if you'd miss checking the time without pulling out your phone. The Inspire 3's screen shows the clock, steps, heart rate and call, text, calendar and app notifications, plus a Find Phone app, a timer and stopwatch, live workout stats, and alarms you set and snooze on the tracker.4, 6, 16
The Air has a status light: white while charging, red when the battery's low. Alarms are silent buzzes you set in the app, and workouts start from your phone if auto-detection misses them. DC Rainmaker says you'll "pretty much never see" the LED.7, 20
Small habits decide it. One r/fitbit owner moving to the Air realized they'd lose the Inspire 3 timer they use for rest between sets (it counts minutes and seconds only).16, 25 Tom's Guide's Dan Bracaglia, a longtime Inspire 3 wearer, says getting around the Inspire 3's controls is "a hit-or-miss affair," depending on how well you read tiny text and how dainty your fingers are, and he prefers the Air's simpler design.21 At night the Air is just dark; the Inspire 3's sleep mode mutes notifications and turns the screen off.4 Want a screen plus built-in GPS? That's the Charge 6, covered in our Fitbit Air vs Charge 6 comparison.29
Which Has Better Battery Life, the Air or the Inspire 3?
The Inspire 3, on paper and in published tests. Google rates it at up to 10 days and the Air at up to 7. Tom's Guide said its Inspire 3 easily hit 10 days and the Air matched its 7, and DC Rainmaker got about a week from an Air.1, 3, 20, 21
Two caveats on that 10. Google says SpO2 tracking on the Inspire 3 "requires more frequent charging," and that always-on display "may require more frequent charging"; 9to5Google put it at about three days at launch. Google doesn't say how much SpO2 costs you.3, 4, 19
Charging flips it. The Air fills up in 90 minutes and gets a day from 5; the Inspire 3 takes two hours, and Google lists no quick-charge figure for it.1, 3 One owner who switched said the Air's charger also makes solid contact without any wiggling.25
Fitbit Air vs Inspire 3 for Sleep: Which Is Better?
The Air, mostly for comfort: 12 grams against 17.69, 8.3 mm thick against 11.75, and nothing to light up when you roll over.1, 3
The sleep features match: Sleep Score, light, deep and REM stages, overnight SpO2, skin temperature variation and a Smart Wake alarm.4, 7, 26 r/fitbit owners argue over whether the Air has a newer sleep algorithm, but Google's Sleep Score help page describes one updated algorithm and doesn't single out the Air.18, 25 No lab has compared these two. In one Wall Street Journal sleep-lab night summarized by 9to5Mac, the Air finished a close second to an Apple Watch Series 11; the Inspire 3 wasn't in that test.27
Is the Inspire 3 Too Old to Buy in 2026?
Not yet. Google guarantees Inspire 3 security updates until at least February 2028 and the Air's until at least May 2028. Both may be extended while they're on sale, since Google's policy is at least two years of updates after a device is last sold on Fitbit.com or the Google Store. The Inspire 3's risk is that it leaves the store first. (The Inspire 2's guarantee ended in April 2026.)9, 10
Features are where age shows. Google announced Health Guardian, background trends for blood pressure, insulin resistance and sleep breathing quality, for "qualified Pixel Watches and Fitbit Air." On September 24 it said Air owners would get the blood pressure and insulin resistance trends with Premium "later this year." The Inspire 3 isn't named. They're wellness trends, not readings or a screen for hypertension or diabetes.11, 12
The everyday features still match: both get irregular rhythm notifications and a Readiness score, and Google sells Google Health Coach for the Inspire 3 too.4, 8, 17 Both moved from the Fitbit app the same way; our Google Health app explainer covers it.
How Do You Wear Each One: Bands, Clip and Wrist Size?
Wrist size. Both are wrist trackers with swappable bands, water resistant to 50 meters.1, 3 The Air's woven band fits 130 to 210 mm, and its silicone Active band comes in small and large, also topping out at 210 mm. The Inspire 3 ships with a small (5.1 to 7.5 in) and a large (6.3 to 8.7 in) band. Over about 8.3 inches, only the Inspire 3 has an official fit.1, 3
The clip. Google's $19.95 Inspire 3 Clip, out of stock on its store on October 5, 2026, holds the tracker on a belt, pocket or bra. In clipped mode, heart-rate tracking, automatic exercise tracking and Active Zone Minutes turn off, so it's a step counter.5, 6
The Air. Google describes wrist wear only.7 Our Fitbit Air ankle guide covers people who tried otherwise, and our Fitbit Air bands guide compares the three official bands, which swap without tools. Tom's Guide found Inspire 3 band swaps fiddlier.21
What Do the Air and Inspire 3 Cost Over Three Years?
About the same, unless the Inspire 3 is on sale. The bigger decision is Premium. The free tier covers steps, Readiness, Sleep Score and stages, heart rate, HRV, breathing rate and SpO2. Premium ($9.99 a month or $99.99 a year) adds Google Health Coach, detailed sleep insights, workouts and mindfulness, plus the Inspire 3's monthly sleep profile and stress-score breakdown, and Google says the Air's Health Guardian trends will require it.4, 6, 12, 14, 15 Both include three months free; the Inspire 3 launched with six. Google's terms for the Air say the trial rolls into $9.99 a month unless you cancel, and Google AI Pro and Ultra plans include Premium.2, 4, 13, 19
| Setup (Google Store prices, Oct 5, 2026; before tax) | Tracker | Premium over 3 years | 3-year total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fitbit Air, free tier | $99.99 | $0 | $99.99 |
| Inspire 3, free tier | $99.95 | $0 | $99.95 |
| Fitbit Air + Premium, yearly after the trial | $99.99 | $299.97 | $399.96 |
| Inspire 3 + Premium, yearly after the trial | $99.95 | $299.97 | $399.92 |
| Either + Premium, monthly after the trial | $99.95 to $99.99 | $329.67 | $429.62 to $429.66 |
| Inspire 3 at its Cyber Monday 2025 price, free tier | $69.95 | $0 | $69.95 |
How we counted: three free months, then three yearly payments of $99.99 or 33 monthly payments of $9.99. $69.95 was a past sale. Tax excluded.13, 14, 15, 23
The Inspire 3 fell to $69.95 from $99.95 at Target on Cyber Monday 2025, the same Cyber Monday price TechRadar had seen three years running.23 The Air hadn't been discounted as of Tom's Guide's August 2026 roundup and was still $99.99 at Google on October 5; our Black Friday fitness tracker guide has price targets.2, 24 Google also lists the Air (not the Special Editions) as HSA/FSA eligible by receipt, and the Inspire 3 page doesn't; your plan decides (see our HSA/FSA guide).2
Which Is Better for Older Adults?
For a parent who wants the time and their step count on the wrist, the Inspire 3. On the Air, every number lives in a phone app.4, 7 Either one needs a smartphone (iOS 16.4 or Android 11 or newer) and a Google Account.1, 3 Both send irregular rhythm notifications, built on an algorithm the FDA cleared in 2022; Google says they're not for anyone under 22 or already diagnosed with AFib, don't run in real time and can miss episodes.8, 28 Tom's Guide calls the Inspire 3's screen "comically small." And neither lists fall detection or emergency SOS; in Google's lineup, those are Pixel Watch features.21, 26
Is It Worth Upgrading From an Inspire 3 to the Air?
Only if you've stopped looking at the screen. One r/fitbit owner who switched found the Air slimmer and comfier, but more of a sidestep than an upgrade.25 You'd gain a lighter band, faster charging and Health Guardian (with Premium). In Tom's Guide's single 3,500-step walk, the Air logged 3,501 steps and 1.89 miles against a 1.90-mile Strava track; the Inspire 3 logged 3,517 steps but 1.62 miles.22 You'd lose the clock, notifications, timer, on-wrist workouts and three days of rated battery. With updates guaranteed to February 2028, there's no rush. On an Inspire 2, whose guarantee ended in April 2026, switching to either makes sense.9

Pick the Inspire 3 if…- You check the time, texts or a workout timer on your wrist.
- You want up to 10 days between charges.

Fitbit Air vs Inspire 3 FAQ
Is the Fitbit Air better than the Inspire 3?
Not across the board. The Air is lighter, charges faster and is in line for Google's Health Guardian trends. The Inspire 3 has a screen for the time, notifications and timers, and Google rates its battery at up to 10 days against the Air's 7.1, 3, 12
Is the Fitbit Inspire 3 still good in 2026?
Yes, if you want a screen for about $100. It still gets irregular rhythm notifications, Readiness and Google Health Coach, and Google guarantees its security updates until at least February 2028. Google hasn't named it for Health Guardian, though.4, 8, 9, 12
What is the point of the Fitbit Air?
It's a 12-gram tracker with no screen, made to wear day and night without lighting up or buzzing with notifications. It tracks sleep, heart rate, HRV, SpO2 and skin temperature changes, can flag a possible AFib rhythm, and shows everything on your phone.1, 2, 7
Do the Fitbit Air and Inspire 3 need a subscription?
No. Sleep stages, heart rate, HRV, SpO2 and Readiness are free for both. Google Health Premium, $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year, adds AI coaching and deeper insights, and Google says the Air's coming blood pressure and insulin resistance trends require it. Both include three months free (October 2026).2, 4, 12, 14, 15
What is a good replacement for the Fitbit Inspire 3?
To keep a screen, another Inspire 3 or a Fitbit Charge 6, which adds built-in GPS. If you never look at the screen, the Fitbit Air costs about the same and weighs less. A working Inspire 3 has security updates guaranteed until at least February 2028.1, 9, 29
Can you clip the Fitbit Air or Inspire 3 to your clothes?
Officially, only the Inspire 3, with Google's $19.95 clip. Clipped, it stops tracking heart rate, automatic exercise and Active Zone Minutes, so it works as a step counter. Google describes wearing the Air on the wrist only.5, 6, 7
