Hatch Restore 3 Review: Is Hatch+ Worth It, and What Still Works If You Don't Pay?
Quick answer: The Hatch Restore 3 is worth its $169.99 list price if you want a sunrise alarm and sound machine you run with buttons instead of your phone. Hatch+ ($5.99 a month or $59.99 a year in October 2026) is optional: the sunrise alarm, every sunrise light scene and 45 sleep sounds stay free. Three years with yearly Hatch+ comes to $349.96, clock included.1, 2, 3
Spend an evening in the owner threads and you'll see two camps. People who bought it to wake up to light instead of a blaring phone mostly love it, and a few say the sunrise gets them up before the alarm sound even starts. People who expected a big free sound library, or a Bluetooth speaker, feel boxed in by the Hatch+ screen they hit during setup.4
The subscription also got more expensive, and a lot of the reviews you'll find haven't caught up. Reviews from 2025 and the first half of 2026 quote Hatch+ at $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year (WIRED rounded it to $5 and $50). On October 3, 2026, Hatch's own pages list $5.99 and $59.99, and that's the price we used for every number below.1, 2, 5, 6, 7
This review pulls from Hatch's store pages and about 30 of its support articles, reviews from WIRED, The Strategist and Prevention, four sleep studies on dawn simulation, and roughly 15 Reddit threads from owners, read through September 30, 2026 and paraphrased.
- Buy it if you want a sunrise alarm, a white noise machine and a bedtime routine in one nightstand device you control with buttons. The free tier covers all three. $169.99 at Hatch.
- Skip Hatch+ unless you'll use the Unwind library (meditations, sleep stories, podcasts) most nights. Three years of it, $179.97, costs more than the clock.
- Look elsewhere if you can't stand apps or your Wi-Fi is flaky. Setup and every routine change go through the Hatch Sleep app on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. The Philips SmartSleep HF3650 needs neither.
- Want sleep tracking too? Hatch's newer Sleep Clock ($249.99) adds it with no subscription. Here's how they differ.
What Is the Hatch Restore 3, and How Does It Work?
The Hatch Restore 3 is a $169.99 bedside clock that combines a sunrise alarm, a sound machine and a small reading light. You set it up in the Hatch Sleep app, then run it night to night with buttons on top. Hatch released it in early 2025 as the successor to the Restore 2, and WIRED reviewed it on February 4, 2025.1, 5

A normal night goes like this. Press the Big Button and your Unwind routine starts, maybe a meditation with a slow sunset light. Press it again to skip to the Sleep step, usually a sound that plays for a set time or all night. In the morning, the sunrise starts at the time you picked and the alarm sound plays once it's at full strength. A tap on the Big Button snoozes the sound for nine minutes; press and hold to turn the alarm off.8, 9
So is it phone-free? For the nightly routine, mostly. Hatch says you need the app to set up and register the Restore 3, and you'll be back in the app any time you change an alarm or a routine. Even the light's brightness can only be adjusted in the app.1, 8
How Much Does the Hatch Restore 3 Cost Over 3 Years, With and Without Hatch+?
Over three years, the Hatch Restore 3 costs $169.99 if you cancel the Hatch+ trial, $349.96 if you pay for Hatch+ yearly and $379.64 if you pay monthly. In other words, three years of Hatch+ on the yearly plan ($179.97) costs more than the clock itself.1, 2
| Setup (USD, makers' prices on October 3, 2026) | Upfront | After 1 year | After 2 years | After 3 years |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hatch Restore 3, free tier (trial canceled) | $169.99 | $169.99 | $169.99 | $169.99 |
| Hatch Restore 3 + Hatch+, yearly | $169.99 | $229.98 | $289.97 | $349.96 |
| Hatch Restore 3 + Hatch+, monthly | $169.99 | $235.88 | $307.76 | $379.64 |
| Hatch Sleep Clock, free tier (sleep tracking included) | $249.99 | $249.99 | $249.99 | $249.99 |
| Philips SmartSleep HF3650 (no subscription) | $179.99 | $179.99 | $179.99 | $179.99 |
| Loftie Clock + Loftie Lamp (no subscription) | $479.98 | $479.98 | $479.98 | $479.98 |
How we calculated it: the maker's list price, plus each Hatch+ payment billed when the 30-day free trial ends and then every 12 months (yearly plan) or every month (monthly plan). Each column is what you've paid by the end of that year, before sales tax. Prices come from hatch.co, Philips's US store (the HF3650 was $179.99 there on October 3, 2026, against a $199.99 suggested price) and loftie.com (US finishes). Hatch says one Hatch+ membership covers every Hatch device on your account, and the free trial applies once per account.1, 2, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17

If you're going to pay, pay yearly. Twelve monthly payments come to $71.88, so the $59.99 yearly plan saves you $11.89 a year.1, 2 And if you want to spend less up front, Hatch sells certified refurbished Restore 3 units for $119.99 (October 3, 2026) with the same one-year warranty as new ones.18
Can You Use the Hatch Restore 3 Without a Subscription?
Yes. Without Hatch+, the Hatch Restore 3 still does its main jobs: the sunrise alarm with every sunrise light scene, 45 sleep sounds, 26 alarm sounds, the bedside light and all the buttons. Hatch+ adds the big audio library: about 150 more alarm sounds, about 40 more sleep sounds and roughly 165 more Unwind titles such as meditations, sleep stories and podcasts.3

What stays free
Hatch's support center says anything in the app without a star icon comes preloaded and free to use: the sleep sounds, the light options, the sunrise alarm, the Rest Reminder and three of the most popular sunsets.17 The free sleep sounds cover the basics most people buy a noise machine for: white, pink, brown and other colored noise, rain, ocean, a box fan, even a dishwasher and a dryer. Five Unwind options are free, including The Nightly podcast and Meditations for a Racing Mind.3
The features are mostly free as well: Tap for Time, pause, Rest Reminder, Goodnight Phone, Love Notes and the bedside light button. Routine Swap is limited, though. Hatch's September 2026 list says non-subscribers can save up to three routines, each limited to one step of free Unwind content; WIRED and The Strategist, writing earlier, counted two free routines.3, 5, 19 Hatch's own counts don't quite agree, by the way: its membership page says 20 free alarms, while the support list names 26 free alarm sounds.2, 3
What Hatch+ unlocks
Mostly audio. Hatch+ opens the full Unwind library, the themed and seasonal alarm sounds (the latest releases Hatch listed on October 1 included a Cozy Fall Jazz alarm), longer routines with up to five steps, and Play From Anywhere, which plays your routine through an iPhone and its headphones. That last one is iPhone-only. Hatch says new audio lands in the Hatch+ library every week.2, 3, 12, 20
Do you have to start a Hatch+ trial to set it up?
Yes. Hatch's support center says you're required to start the free Hatch+ trial as part of setup, and that you can cancel at any time and keep the basic features.17 That trial lasts 30 days, which happens to match Hatch's 30-night return window. The return window counts from the ship date, though, so it closes a few days before a trial you started at setup runs out.1 Owners in more than one thread complain about exactly that overlap: they say they couldn't tell what the free tier felt like until it was too late to send the clock back.4
Two practical things. Set a phone reminder for about day 20, then switch your routine to free content for a few nights before deciding. And if you subscribed through Apple's App Store or Google Play, refunds go through that store; Hatch can only look at refunds for memberships bought on hatch.co. Once you cancel, Hatch+ steps drop out of your routine when the renewal date passes.21
Finding the free stuff takes some digging. When you add an alarm, Hatch tells non-subscribers to tap See More and scroll to the bottom for the free options. An owner said in February 2026 that once the trial ended, the alarm picker showed only about five free alarms, and support had to send a list of the rest, which turned up only through search.4, 9
Is Hatch+ Worth It?
Hatch+ is worth $59.99 a year only if you'll use the Unwind library most nights: the meditations, sleep stories, podcasts and sleep music. If you mainly want a sunrise alarm and all-night white noise, the free tier already does that, and three years of Hatch+ ($179.97) would cost more than the clock.2, 3
- ✓ You fall asleep to stories, meditations or podcasts and would otherwise pay for a sleep app
- ✓ You like building multi-step routines (wind-down, then reading light, then sleep sound)
- ✓ You want new alarm sounds every season instead of the same 26
- ✓ You own other Hatch devices, like a kid's Rest: one membership covers them all
- ✕ You play the same brown noise all night and wake to the sunrise
- ✕ You already pay for Calm, Headspace or a podcast app you'd rather use
- ✕ You want your own music or podcasts on the clock (Hatch+ doesn't change that)
- ✕ You're on Android and wanted Play From Anywhere, which is iPhone-only
Based on Hatch's support pages on free content, multiple devices, headphones and speakers.3, 12, 17
Hatch says Hatch+ includes more than 2,500 pieces of original audio. Its own support list shows about 165 Unwind titles beyond the free ones, many of them series with multiple episodes.2, 3 Some owners still find it thin: an August 2026 post on r/HatchApp said the sleep-story section looked like about 25 titles and asked what they were missing. Others are glad to pay; a June 2026 commenter on r/BuyItForLife has used a Hatch every night for about two and a half years (so probably an earlier model) and keeps the subscription.4, 22
How Well Does the Hatch Restore 3 Work as a Sunrise Alarm?
Well enough for the professional reviewers who used it. WIRED's reviewer found the Restore 3 bright enough to wake up to, where the Restore 2 had been too dim, and found 75% brightness plenty. It doesn't go to full brightness by default, so check the setting.5
Hatch's sunrise moves from red to orange to white before your alarm sound plays. You choose the start time, the days, the brightness, the volume and how long the sunrise lasts.1, 9 Prevention's tester used a 15-minute sunrise with brightness and volume at 50%, and was sometimes awake from the light before the sound started.6 We couldn't find a brightness rating in lux from Hatch. Philips rates its HF3650 at up to 310 lux, for comparison.23
Reviewers' complaints are small ones. WIRED found the bedside light closer to a personal reading light than a real lamp, and the sunset mode less gradual than on other sunrise alarms.5 Owners raise two more, both about the clock face. A longtime Philips user who moved to the Restore 3 finds its white digits noticeable even fully dimmed, and someone who wanted the display dark all night but on at 6:30 a.m. found the light sensor kept it off in a dark room.4 Hatch lets you set the display to Off at Night with tap-to-see-the-time, and the day and night brightness levels follow that ambient light sensor.24
One more thing to know before you trust it with an early flight. Hatch says the Restore 3 requires Wi-Fi, and we couldn't find a Hatch statement on whether saved alarms still go off when your Wi-Fi drops.10 For the first couple of weeks, keep a backup alarm on your phone, the same two-alarm habit we suggest in our Fitbit Air alarm guide.
Do Sunrise Alarm Clocks Actually Work? What the Research Says
Sunrise alarms have real but modest evidence for easing groggy mornings, and stronger evidence as a treatment for winter depression. None of these studies tested whether they help you fall asleep faster.25, 26, 27
- Winter depression: a 2005 meta-analysis in the American Journal of Psychiatry pooled five randomized trials of dawn simulation for seasonal affective disorder and found an effect size of 0.73, in the range of most antidepressant drug trials. Those trials used dawn simulation as a treatment, and Hatch doesn't market the Restore 3 as one.25
- Morning grogginess: in a small 2014 study funded by Lumie, which makes wake-up lights, eight people who struggled to wake up got a simulated dawn during their last 30 minutes of sleep. They rated their sleep and alertness higher and had faster reaction times than on control mornings without it.26
- The cortisol claim: Hatch says its sunrise prompts your brain to release cortisol. A 2004 study of 12 healthy adults, using a dawn simulator made by Outside In (Cambridge) Ltd, backs the idea on a small scale: a bedside light rising to about 250 lux over 30 minutes raised their cortisol response after waking and made them feel more alert.1, 28
- A cautionary result: a 2024 lab study of 29 adults who are slow to wake tried a combined light, sound and warmth "smart alarm" and found little overall effect on reaction-time tests. For moderate evening types, 15 minutes of light or less went worse than a plain alarm, while longer light helped a little. Delos Living, which employs several of the authors, funded it.27
Our read: give the sunrise around 30 minutes, the window the positive studies used, and judge it by how you feel in the first hour after waking. If your real problem is getting to sleep, a sunrise lamp won't touch it; our weighted blanket vs sunrise alarm clock comparison covers that side of the night. And if a ring or band keeps grading your nights badly, our guide to what to buy when your sleep score is low sorts out which problem to fix first.
What Do Hatch Restore 3 Owners Complain About Most?
Hatch Restore 3 owners complain most about depending on the app and Wi-Fi, firmware updates that won't finish, and the subscription prompts. These come from public posts, which lean toward people with problems, so read them as things to check, not as failure rates.4, 22
It leans on the app and Wi-Fi
In July 2026, an owner on r/sleep spent a night without white noise because the Hatch app was down and the clock wouldn't start the sound they needed to sleep.4 Dorm Wi-Fi is the other sore spot. A student in August said their Restore 3 would only connect through a phone hotspot. Hatch's troubleshooting page suggests a hotspot or a travel router, and an August 2026 guide says Hatch devices can now sign in to eduroam after a software update, which they have to download on a regular network first.10, 22
Some units get stuck updating
Two r/HatchApp posts from July and August 2026 describe a Restore 3 stuck in a firmware update loop, with previews or most content refusing to play, and both owners said Hatch's replacement unit did the same thing. One of them went out of their way to praise Hatch support. Hatch's own fix is to keep the clock next to the router, close the app, and reset it by holding the connect button while you plug it back in.22, 29
Other things worth knowing
- Hatch audio only. It isn't a Bluetooth speaker, which a Hatch rep repeated on Reddit in August 2026; headphones work only through Play From Anywhere, with Hatch+ on an iPhone.4, 12
- One person per clock. Hatch calls the Restore 3 a personal device; a partner who wants to control it has to share your Hatch login.30
- Wall power only. Hatch's support center says Restore needs electricity to run, so don't count on it during a power cut.11
- Lose the power cord, buy Hatch's. Hatch sells replacement cords on its accessories page; an owner on r/sleep complained that Hatch doesn't publish the plug size and listed it as 24V 1.5A with a 3.5 x 1.35 mm barrel.4, 31 Hatch hasn't confirmed those specs, so its own cord is the safe choice.
Hatch Restore 3 vs Philips SmartSleep vs Loftie: Which Should You Buy?
Pick the Hatch Restore 3 for routines, sounds and buttons in one $169.99 box. Pick the Philips SmartSleep HF3650 ($179.99 at Philips in October 2026) for a bright sunrise with no app or Wi-Fi. Pick Loftie only if you want no subscription at all and don't mind buying two devices, because Loftie says its Loftie Clock isn't a sunrise alarm.1, 14, 15

Hatch Restore 3 vs Philips SmartSleep
The Philips is the simpler, brighter alarm; the Hatch is the better bedtime machine. Philips's leaflet lists no app and no phone control on the HF3650, a 30-minute sunrise from red to yellow, 25 brightness steps up to 310 lux, seven wake-up sounds, FM radio, a sunset mode and RelaxBreathe, a light-guided breathing exercise. It also charges your phone.14, 23 Nothing about it depends on Wi-Fi or a subscription, which is exactly what bothers most unhappy Hatch owners.
The owner who switched after a decade of Philips lights summed up the trade well: the Philips wakes you better with light and keeps its clock digits red, but its buttons are hard to read in the dark and it can't schedule different alarms for different days. The Hatch is smaller, handles weekday and weekend alarms in the app, and doubles as a noise machine.4 That owner's current Philips is the older HF3520, so take the details as a family resemblance rather than a spec sheet.
Hatch Restore 3 vs Loftie
Loftie is the no-subscription option, but it splits the job across two devices. The $199.99 Loftie Clock has a two-phase alarm, 100+ sounds with no paywall, Bluetooth speaker support, a No-WiFi mode once it's set up, and a backup battery Loftie says lasts about 5 to 7 hours unplugged. Loftie's own FAQ says it isn't a sunrise alarm and points you to the $279.99 Loftie Lamp for that.15, 16 The Lamp handles sunrise and sunset light but has no sound of its own, and it needs 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi for alarms.16 Buy both and you're at $479.98, more than three years of Hatch with Hatch+.
Hatch Restore 3 vs Hatch Sleep Clock vs Restore 2: Which Hatch Should You Get?
Get the Hatch Restore 3 if you want to sleep and wake better without data. Get the $249.99 Hatch Sleep Clock if you also want sleep tracking without wearing anything. Skip the Restore 2 unless it's nearly free: it has only two buttons on top, and WIRED found it too dim to wake its reviewer.5, 13, 32
Hatch launched the Sleep Clock in August 2026. It looks like a Restore and adds contactless tracking: sensors read your breathing and movement from the nightstand, and the app turns that into insights and suggestions instead of a nightly score.13, 33 Hatch says tracking and insights don't need Hatch+, and that the Sleep Clock is 97% accurate. That's Hatch's own figure, and its product page doesn't cite a published study.2, 13 Hatch+ costs the same on either device. At launch, Hatch sold it only on hatch.co, and Mugglehead reported in August that other retailers would carry it later in the year.34
The Restore 2 has two buttons on top, Rest and Rise.5, 35 The Restore 3 added the Big Button with its volume dial, pause, routine swap, a bedside light button and an alarm slider, and WIRED found it bigger and brighter.5 Hatch's refurbished store had the Restore 3 at $119.99 and the Restore 2 at $110.49 on October 3, 2026, so the newer model is the easy pick.18
Already wear a tracker? Then you may not need the Sleep Clock's tracking at all. For the same $169.99 as a Restore 3, the Garmin Index Sleep Monitor tracks sleep from your upper arm and buzzes you awake, though it does nothing for the light or sound in your bedroom.
Who Should Buy the Hatch Restore 3, and Who Should Skip It?
Buy the Hatch Restore 3 if light wakes you better than sound and you want your nightly routine on buttons. Skip it if apps, Wi-Fi or subscriptions are deal-breakers, because all three are part of owning one.
- Good fit: you sleep through or resent your phone alarm; you want white or brown noise all night; you'd like a wind-down routine that ends with the phone face down; you're fine checking the app once in a while.
- Poor fit: you want a set-and-forget clock with no app; your Wi-Fi is a dorm, hotel or patchy mesh network; you want to fall asleep to your own podcasts; you share a bed with someone on a different wake time (the sunrise lights up the room for both of you).
- Waiting for Black Friday? Hatch's store showed no Black Friday pricing on October 3, 2026. Measure any November 27 to 30 deal against the $169.99 list price and the $119.99 refurbished unit.1, 18 Shopping for someone else? Hatch Restore 3 FAQ
Is the Hatch Restore 3 worth the money?
For most buyers, yes, at its $169.99 list price, if you want a sunrise alarm, a sound machine and button controls in one device. Hatch+ is the part to question: at $59.99 a year (October 2026), three years of it costs $179.97, more than the clock.1, 2
Can the Hatch Restore 3 work without a subscription?
Yes. Without Hatch+ you keep the sunrise alarm with all of its sunrise light scenes, 45 sleep sounds, 26 alarm sounds, five Unwind options, the bedside light and the buttons. Hatch's support center says you have to start the free Hatch+ trial during setup, so cancel before it renews.3, 17
How much is Hatch+ in 2026?
Hatch lists Hatch+ at $5.99 a month or $59.99 a year as of October 2026, after a 30-day free trial that comes with the Restore 3. Older reviews quote $4.99 and $49.99. One membership covers every Hatch device on your account.1, 2, 17
Does the Hatch Restore 3 work without Wi-Fi?
Hatch says the Restore 3 requires a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi connection, and you need the Hatch Sleep app to set it up and change alarms or routines. We couldn't find Hatch guidance on whether saved alarms still sound when Wi-Fi drops, so keep a backup alarm at first.1, 10
Does the Hatch Restore 3 have a battery?
Not one that keeps it running. Hatch's support center says Restore needs electricity to run, so don't count on the light or alarm sound during a power cut. If you need battery backup, the Loftie Clock has one that Loftie rates at about 5 to 7 hours unplugged.11, 15
What is the difference between the Hatch Restore 2 and Restore 3?
The Restore 3 is bigger and brighter and adds physical controls: a Big Button that also adjusts volume, pause and routine-swap buttons, a bedside light button and an alarm slider. The Restore 2 has two buttons on top, Rest and Rise. WIRED found the Restore 2 too dim to wake its reviewer.5, 35
Can you play your own music or podcasts on the Hatch Restore 3?
No. Hatch says the Restore 3 isn't a Bluetooth speaker and only plays content from the Hatch library. With Hatch+ on an iPhone, Play From Anywhere sends your routine to the phone so you can listen with headphones. If your own audio matters, the Philips HF3650 has an AUX input and Loftie lists Bluetooth speaker support on its clock.12, 15, 23
Is there a Hatch Restore 4?
Not as of October 3, 2026. Hatch's newest bedside clock is the Hatch Sleep Clock ($249.99), launched in August 2026, which adds contactless sleep tracking to the Restore 3's sunrise alarm and sounds. The Restore 3 is still on sale at $169.99.1, 13, 33
Can two people share one Hatch Restore 3?
Only through one account. Hatch designed the Restore 3 as a personal device without multiple user profiles, so a partner who wants to control it has to log in with your Hatch account. Remember that the sunrise light will reach both sides of the bed.30
