Best Smart Christmas Lights 2026: Govee, Twinkly, Hue, and Whether Permanent Lights Are Worth It
Quick answer: The Govee Christmas Lights 2 is the smart Christmas light most homes should buy: $99.99 list for 66 ft and 200 LEDs (October 2026), rated IP65, with Matter, Alexa and Google built in. Done with ladders? The Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights 2 Pro ($499.99 for 100 ft) costs about $385 more over five seasons than a Govee string you hang yourself.
Every December the same two camps show up. One group wants a tree that does something more interesting than blink, and a phone app that can turn it red and green for the office party and soft white for Christmas Eve. The other group is tired. Tired of the ladder, the tangled box in the garage, and the Saturday in January spent pulling clips off the gutter. Smart lights solve the first problem in an afternoon. Permanent lights are the expensive answer to the second, and this year Govee, Philips Hue and Twinkly all sell both kinds. So below you'll find five picks, the five-season math nobody else seems to run, and the electricity cost per season worked out from each maker's own wattage.
- Best for most homes: Govee Christmas Lights 2, $99.99 list for 66 ft and 200 LEDs, IP65, Matter, Alexa and Google
- Best permanent: Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights 2 Pro, $499.99 list for 100 ft, dual-layer color, IP68, cuttable
- Best tree effects: Twinkly Strings (Multicolor + White), $139.99 list for 250 LEDs, camera mapping across strings, no Matter
- Best if you already run Hue: Philips Hue Festavia, $259.99 list for 250 LEDs, new curtain, icicle and net shapes for 2026
- Cheapest: the lights you already own on a Kasa EP40A outdoor smart plug, on/off schedules only, no colors
Which smart Christmas lights should you buy in 2026?
For one tree or a porch railing, buy the Govee Christmas Lights 2. It's the cheapest of the app-controlled strings here at list price and the only one with Matter built into the string itself. The table below lines up the five picks on the things that actually decide it: price, weather rating, which apps it talks to, and whether you need an account or a hub. Prices are each maker's own list price; "rated power" is the maximum draw the maker or listing publishes, which matters for the electricity math further down.

Govee Christmas Lights 2 review: is it the best smart string for most homes?
The Govee Christmas Lights 2 is the easiest smart string to recommend in 2026 because it does the most for the least money. Govee lists four lengths: 66 ft for $99.99, 99 ft for $129.99, 164 ft for $199.99 and 328 ft for $399.99, and Govee's store had the three shorter lengths on sale for less on October 3.1 The 66 ft set carries 200 RGBWIC LEDs, which means every bulb has its own chip plus a dedicated white diode, so you can run a warm white that doesn't look like a muddy mix of red, green and blue. Govee's sizing rule of thumb is 66 ft for a 6 ft tree, 99 ft for 7.5 ft and 164 ft for 9 ft.1
The software is where Govee pulls ahead on value. There are 130+ preset scenes, a built-in mic for music sync, shape mapping so effects follow the outline of your tree, and the AI Lighting Bot, which builds an effect from a typed, spoken or photo prompt.1 It's also the only string in this guide with Matter in the string itself, alongside Alexa and Google Home,1 so it can join Apple Home without a brand-specific bridge. Matter only carries the basics, though: on/off, brightness, color temperature and color, per Govee's own Matter FAQ.2 The scenes and the AI bot stay in the Govee Home app.
The string is rated IP65 and Govee says it's fine outside down to -4°F, but the power adapter is a different story. Govee's FAQ says the adapter is for dry locations, so it needs to sit indoors or inside an outdoor waterproof box.1 Also plan one outlet per string: the Amazon listing notes these strings don't connect end to end.3
- Real warm white from dedicated white LEDs
- Matter, Alexa and Google in one string
- Govee replaced damaged or faulty sets quickly in several Reddit reports15
Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights 2 Pro review: is the new dual-layer version worth $499.99?
The Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights 2 Pro is worth it if you light the same roofline every year and plan to stay in the house for at least three or four more seasons. Govee launched it on September 7, 2026 at $499.99 for 100 ft and $799.99 for 200 ft.4 The headline feature is what Govee calls dual-layer color: each light has independently controlled upper and lower layers, so one light can show two colors at once, which Govee pitches for wall-washing and architectural highlights.4, 6 The AI Lighting Bot 2.0 sets both layers from one prompt.6
The hardware is built to stay up. Govee rates the lights and Y-connector IP68 and the control box and power adapter IP67, and you can cut, extend or reconnect runs to fit odd rooflines, with the Y-connector splitting a run into two separately controlled branches.6 Each light puts out 40 lumens, whites run from 1000K to 10000K, and it connects over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, with Matter, Alexa and Google Assistant support.6 The 200 ft kit has 84 lights;6 the 100 ft kit has 42, according to the Amazon listing.5
Downsides are real, though. $499.99 is a lot for 100 ft when Govee's own non-Pro version costs much less (more on that just below). It's brand new, so there are no long-term owner reports yet; what's on Reddit so far is mostly Govee's own promotional posts. And one owner of Govee's older Permanent Outdoor Lights Pro said in December 2025 that adding it to Google Home over Matter was hit or miss, and even paired lights mostly showed as offline.15
Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights 2 vs 2 Pro
The plain Permanent Outdoor Lights 2 is $279.99 for 100 ft, $220 less than the Pro.4, 16 You get more lights (72 on the 100 ft kit, spaced 417 mm apart), the same 40 lumens per light, Matter, and AI effects. What you give up: it's rated IP67 rather than IP68, it can't be cut, and there's no dual-layer color or Y-connector.16 For a simple ranch roofline you can measure exactly, the cheaper kit is enough. For gables, a garage break, or a run that has to split around a dormer, the Pro's cutting and Y-connector earn their keep.
Twinkly Strings: still the one to beat for tree effects?
Yes, if what you care about most is how the tree looks. Twinkly's trick is mapping: you point your phone's camera at the tree and the app finds every LED, building a layout so effects sweep across the tree the way you see it.17 You can group and map several Twinkly devices as one display.7 One Reddit owner who put 1,600 Twinkly LEDs on a 7.5 ft tree makes a useful test case. The Twinkly strings tangled so badly coming off the tree that untangling took two adults hours, so they bought 1,400 Govee LEDs for next year. A week later they wrote that Govee couldn't quite compete with Twinkly on a tree, because a group of Govee strings couldn't be mapped as one (January 2025).15
The current Strings Multicolor + White lists at $139.99 for 250 LEDs over 65.6 ft, rated IP44 and 36 W, with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Alexa, Google Home and Homey.7 Twinkly's denser Strings HD, launched for the 2025 season, run $179.99 for 500 LEDs and $239.99 for 700.18 We didn't find a 2026 Twinkly lineup announcement as of October 3.
Now the trade-offs. Twinkly's help center says you need a Twinkly account to use the app at all.9 Matter isn't in its integration list,7 and Apple Home support on Generation II devices covers on/off, brightness and a dominant color only.8 IP44 is splash-resistant rather than storm-proof, and it's the priciest string per foot here after Hue. Twinkly sells it direct on its own site, so this pick has no Amazon link.
Philips Hue Festavia: is there a new version for 2026?
Yes, though not a new string. Hue's U.S. store now lists three Festavia shapes marked New: curtain (4.5 × 6.5 ft), icicle (28 ft) and net (3.3 × 11.5 ft), each with 250 LEDs and each $249.99.13, 19 The curtain and icicle versions are rated IP54 with an IP44 power supply and draw about 14 W.13, 19 Hue also sells Festavia permanent outdoor lights at $399.99 for 90 ft and $599.99 for 150 ft; the 90 ft kit has 48 lights at up to 50 lumens each, is rated IP65, and Hue says it needs a Bridge.13, 20
The classic Festavia string isn't a new model. Hue's FAQ dates the indoor/outdoor version to 2023, and the 65.6 ft string is 250 LEDs, IP54 and 14 W for $259.99.10 It runs over Bluetooth without Wi-Fi.10 Hue's pages for the new Festavia shapes say the dynamic effects (sparkling stars, dancing flames) and music sync come with a Hue Bridge, so plan on one for the full show.13, 19 Hue's Matter page says the Bridge and Bridge Pro are what bring Matter to Hue lights,11 and Hue's account page says "Soon, you'll need to create a Philips Hue account," while promising the lights stay controllable when the internet is down.12 The Bridge Pro is $149.99 if you don't own one.13
Buy Festavia if your house already runs on Hue. It slots into your rooms, scenes and switches. If you're starting from zero, $259.99 plus a $149.99 Bridge is a steep entry fee for one string, and at least one longtime Hue owner with a Festavia string complained on Reddit in September 2026 that Hue's prices keep climbing while its effects stay basic.15
Can a smart plug make regular Christmas lights smart?

Yes, for on/off schedules, but you won't get colors or effects. If you already own plain LED strings that still work, the cheapest upgrade is an outdoor smart plug. The Kasa EP40A has two separately controlled sockets, an IP64 rating, a 15A/1875W load limit, and Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home support with no hub.14 Kasa says its schedules can follow sunrise and sunset, so set it once for dusk and you've covered what most people actually want from "smart" lights: they come on and go off by themselves.14
Our best smart plugs for Christmas lights guide compares the outdoor-rated options, and how many smart plugs you need for Christmas lights walks through zones and wattage. Plug outdoor adapters into a GFCI-protected outlet either way; the plug guide explains why.
Are permanent Christmas lights worth it? The five-season math
Permanent lights are worth it if you'd otherwise pay someone to hang your lights, or if the ladder is becoming a real risk. If you hang a seasonal string yourself, the math is less flattering. For about 100 ft of roofline, the Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights 2 Pro comes to about $520 after five seasons, including electricity, against about $136 for a 99 ft Govee Christmas Lights 2 you hang yourself. That's roughly $385 extra, or about $77 a season, to never haul the ladder out again.
| Option (about 100 ft of roofline) | Up front | Electricity per season | After 3 seasons | After 5 seasons |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Govee Christmas Lights 2, 99 ft, you hang it each season | $129.99 | $1.11 | $133 | $136 |
| Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights 2, 100 ft, you install it once | $279.99 | $3.54 | $291 | $298 |
| Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights 2 Pro, 100 ft, you install it once | $499.99 | $4.07 | $512 | $520 |
| Govee Christmas Lights 2, 99 ft, an installer hangs it each season | $129.99 | $1.11 + $500 install | $1,633 | $2,636 |
| Professionally installed permanent system | $2,000–$4,000 for 100 ft21 | Depends on the system | From $2,000 | From $2,000 |

Two things push the decision past the numbers. First, permanent lights aren't only for December: owners run them for other holidays and for game days, which a seasonal string can't easily do.15 Second, the ladder. One Reddit owner stopped hanging lights for three years because bad knees and a bad back made it too risky, then went permanent and now just taps a phone.15 If that's you, the $77 a season is cheap.
The flip side: don't go permanent if you rent, if your HOA restricts exterior fixtures, or if you might move in a couple of years. And professional permanent installs are a different price class entirely. HomeGuide's cost guide puts installed permanent lighting at $20 to $40 per linear foot, or $2,000 to $8,000 for 100 to 200 ft.21 If you'd hire out both jobs, HomeGuide's low-end numbers ($2,000 for 100 ft of installed permanent lights against $500 a season to hang a string) cross over around the fourth season.21
How we calculated
Up-front prices are each maker's U.S. list price on October 3, 2026: Govee Christmas Lights 2 at $129.99 for 99 ft, Permanent Outdoor Lights 2 at $279.99 and 2 Pro at $499.99 for 100 ft.1, 4, 16 The paid-installer row adds HomeGuide's low-end $500 for hanging 100 ft of lights each season.21 HomeGuide notes that takedown can add $100 to $400 when it isn't bundled, and that installers who hang your own lights may charge less than those who supply them, so the real number can land on either side of $500. Electricity uses rated watts from Govee or the Amazon listing, a 45-night season (about Thanksgiving weekend through the first week of January) at 6 hours a night, and the U.S. average residential price of 18.19¢ per kWh for January through July 2026 from the EIA.22 Govee doesn't publish wattage for the 99 ft string, so we scaled the 66 ft listing's 15 W by length to 22.5 W. Rated watts are a maximum; dimmed or colored scenes draw less. Excludes tax, mounting tracks, extension cords and an outdoor-rated box for the Christmas Lights 2 adapter.
How long does it take to install permanent outdoor lights?
Plan on most of a day for 100 ft, even though Govee says two to four hours. Govee's own install guide puts most homes at 2 to 4 hours with a ladder, drill, tape measure and the included clips.23 Owners tell a longer story. Two Reddit owners who timed their installs both landed around six hours: one expected two hours for the Permanent Outdoor Lights 2 and needed six with wire management, and the other put up 150 ft of Hue Festavia permanent lights and screwed each one in because the adhesive wouldn't hold on the soffit. Bigger jobs take longer. A DIYer quoted $6,000 to $8,000 for a pro install put up two Govee kits over three six-hour days, and one perfectionist logged 30 hours on 200 ft of an older Govee Pro kit.15
A few things that save time, from those same threads: do the low sections first to settle your technique before you climb to the peaks, dry-fit the runs on the ground, and have an outlet near the start of the run (one owner put outlets in the attic and fed the cables out through the soffit). If a two-story peak scares you, you can DIY the low parts and pay someone only for the high section: one household got a $350 minimum quote for the whole job and was quoted $100 for just the peak.15
How much electricity do smart Christmas lights use?
Very little: every smart string here costs under $2 a season to run at full brightness, and a 100 ft permanent kit about $4. That's using rated watts from each maker (for the two Govee products whose own pages list none, from Govee's Amazon listing), 6 hours a night for 45 nights, at the EIA's 18.19¢ per kWh U.S. average.22 The Department of Energy says LED strands use about 70% less energy than old incandescent strings,24 which is why this barely registers on a bill.
| Light | Rated watts | kWh per season | Cost per season |
|---|---|---|---|
| Govee Christmas Lights 2, 66 ft | 15 W | 4.05 | $0.74 |
| Twinkly Strings Multicolor + White, 250 | 36 W | 9.72 | $1.77 |
| Philips Hue Festavia string, 250 | 14 W | 3.78 | $0.69 |
| Philips Hue Festavia icicle, 28 ft | 14.6 W | 3.94 | $0.72 |
| Philips Hue Festavia permanent, 90 ft | 38 W | 10.26 | $1.87 |
| Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights 2, 100 ft | 72 W | 19.44 | $3.54 |
| Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights 2 Pro, 100 ft | 82.8 W | 22.36 | $4.07 |

Permanent lights are the exception people forget: they tend to stay on all year. Run the 2 Pro every night for 6 hours at full power and it's about $33 a year, still less than one restaurant dinner. If you want to see what your own display really draws, an energy-monitoring plug will tell you; our do smart plugs save electricity piece covers what those numbers can and can't tell you.
Do smart Christmas lights work with Matter, Apple Home, Alexa and Google?
Govee's lights have Matter built in; Hue gets Matter through its Bridge; Twinkly doesn't list Matter at all. All five picks work with Alexa and Google in some form. Apple Home is where they split:
- Govee Christmas Lights 2 and Permanent 2 Pro: Matter, so they can be added to Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa by scanning the Matter code. Govee's FAQ says you'll need a Matter controller such as a HomePod, Apple TV, Nest Hub or Echo, and Matter covers basic on/off, brightness and color.1, 2, 6
- Philips Hue Festavia: Hue lists Apple Home and Matter; Matter runs through the Hue Bridge or Bridge Pro.10, 11
- Twinkly: Apple Home on Generation II devices after a firmware update, limited to on/off, brightness and a dominant color. No Matter in its integration list.7, 8
- Kasa EP40A: Apple Home, Alexa and Google with no hub, but it's a plug, so it only switches power.14
Do you still need a smart plug if your lights are already smart? Usually not. The Govee, Twinkly and Hue apps all have their own schedules, and a plug that cuts power also cuts off the light's own schedules and effects. A plug still makes sense for plain strings, inflatables or anything without its own app. If you're shopping for one that works across all three ecosystems, our best Matter smart plugs guide covers which ones need a hub.
Which smart outdoor Christmas lights are best for your house?
Pick by where the lights go and how long you'll stay. Here's the short version:
| If you… | Buy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Want one smart string for a tree, porch or bushes | Govee Christmas Lights 2 | $99.99 list, IP65, Matter, no plug needed |
| Care most about tree animations and own several strings | Twinkly Strings | Camera mapping across grouped strings; accept the account and no Matter |
| Already run Philips Hue | Hue Festavia (or the new icicle lights) | Same app, rooms and switches; effects need your Bridge |
| Hang the roofline every year and plan to stay 3+ years | Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights 2 Pro | Up all year; cuttable runs with Y-connector |
| Have a simple roofline and a tighter budget | Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights 2 | $220 less per 100 ft; not cuttable |
| Already own plain LED strings | Kasa EP40A outdoor plug | Dusk-to-bedtime schedule for the lights you have |
| Rent or have strict HOA rules | Any seasonal string | Nothing gets screwed into the house |
One timing note for this season: Black Friday is November 27 and Cyber Monday is November 30. If you want permanent lights up for December, it's worth weighing a possible sale against hanging lights on a ladder in late November weather. We don't predict sale prices. Smart Christmas Lights FAQ
What are the best smart Christmas lights in 2026?
For most homes, the Govee Christmas Lights 2: Govee lists the 66 ft, 200-LED set at $99.99, it's rated IP65, and it works with Matter, Alexa and Google. Twinkly Strings are better for mapped tree effects, Philips Hue Festavia fits homes already on Hue, and Govee's Permanent Outdoor Lights 2 Pro is the pick for rooflines.
Are permanent Christmas lights worth it?
If you'd otherwise pay an installer every season, yes: at HomeGuide's low-end $500 for 100 ft, a permanent kit you put up yourself is cheaper from the first season. Hanging lights yourself? Govee's Permanent Outdoor Lights 2 Pro costs about $385 more than a 99 ft Govee string over five seasons, about $77 a season to skip the ladder.
Is the Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights 2 Pro worth it over the Permanent Outdoor Lights 2?
Only if your roofline needs it. The 2 Pro is $499.99 for 100 ft and adds dual-layer color, IP68 lights, cuttable runs and a Y-connector for split runs. The Permanent Outdoor Lights 2 is $279.99 for 100 ft with 72 lights, IP67 and Matter, but it can't be cut.
Do Govee Christmas Lights 2 work with Apple Home?
Yes, through Matter. Govee lists Matter alongside Alexa and Google, and its Matter FAQ says you add the lights by scanning the Matter code with a controller such as a HomePod or Apple TV. Matter covers on/off, brightness and color; scenes and the AI Lighting Bot stay in the Govee Home app.
Do I still need a smart plug if my Christmas lights are smart?
Usually not. Govee, Twinkly and Hue all schedule lights in their own apps, and cutting power with a plug can knock a smart light offline. A smart plug is still the cheapest way to automate plain LED strings or inflatables, and the Kasa EP40A works with Alexa, Google and Apple Home.
How much does it cost to run smart Christmas lights?
Very little. At rated watts (Govee's Amazon listing where its own page lists none), 6 hours a night for 45 nights and the EIA's 18.19¢ per kWh U.S. average, smart strings cost under $2 a season and a 100 ft Govee permanent kit about $4. Run every night all year, those kits cost roughly $29 to $33.
Does Twinkly need an account or work with Matter?
Twinkly's help center says a Twinkly account is required to use the app. Matter isn't in Twinkly's integration list, which covers Alexa, Google Home and Homey. Generation II devices can be added to Apple Home after a firmware update, but only for on/off, brightness and a dominant color.
Is there a new Philips Hue Festavia for 2026?
There are new shapes rather than a new string. Hue now sells Festavia curtain, icicle and net lights, each with 250 LEDs at $249.99, plus permanent outdoor lights from $399.99 for 90 ft. The classic 65.6 ft, 250-LED string is still the 2023 indoor/outdoor version at $259.99.
